Understanding ratings

What the ratings mean

5: Very good. Full compliance. Clean premises, complete records, trained staff. 4: Good. High standard with minor issues. 3: Generally satisfactory. Some non-compliance, often records-related. 2: Improvement necessary. Multiple issues found. 1: Major improvement necessary. Serious concerns. 0: Urgent improvement necessary. Imminent risk to public health.

Ratings are based on three areas: food hygiene (how safely food is handled), structural compliance (condition of the premises), and confidence in management (records, training, and system reliability). The overall rating is the lowest of the three scores.

Ratings are updated when a new inspection is carried out, typically every 6-24 months depending on the risk category. Businesses can request a re-inspection if they have addressed issues, though a fee usually applies.

For business owners
