Cleaning schedules are a legal requirement
Under SFBB and HACCP, every UK food business must have a written cleaning schedule. It must list: what needs cleaning, how often, who is responsible, what chemicals to use, and a sign-off box for each task. Your EHO will check this during every inspection. A blank schedule or one with gaps is a red flag.
The FSA provides free cleaning schedule templates as part of the SFBB pack. You can download them from food.gov.uk. But a template only solves the "I have a form" problem. It does not solve the "my staff actually fill it in every day" problem.
Where to download free cleaning schedules
The FSA SFBB pack includes cleaning schedules for different business types: caterers, retailers, childminders, and care homes. Each is free to download and print. You can also find templates on training provider websites like Highfield and Virtual College.
However, most businesses find that paper schedules have a common failure mode: they get filled in at the end of the week from memory, not during service when tasks are actually done. This defeats the purpose. A schedule filled in retrospectively is not evidence of a working food safety system — and EHOs can tell the difference.
